About

It started with my mum's Westie.

West Highland Terriers are known for a lot of things. If you have ever lived with one, the thing you remember is the scratching.

My mum had one, and I grew up watching her work through it — the endless ordering of things online, the shampoos that promised the world and smelled like a perfume counter, the ones that helped for a week and then did not. Most of what arrived was either far too harsh to use often, or so heavily fragranced you could smell it from the next room.

[Dom — a couple of specifics here would carry this whole page. What was the dog's name? What did your mum keep buying? What actually helped, in the end?]

SootheHound is a small attempt at the thing I wish had turned up in one of those parcels: a wash gentle enough to use as often as you need to, with nothing in it doing a job other than cleaning.

Who's actually behind this

I'm Dom. I live in Dublin and I'm a software engineer by trade — which is why this site is something I built myself rather than something I bought off a shelf.

Right now SootheHound is one person. If you order something, I am the one who packs it and takes it to the post office. If you email, you get me, not a helpdesk. That will change if it needs to, but for now it means I read every message and I know what is in every box.

What I will and won't claim

I sell grooming products. They clean, and they are made to be mild enough for frequent use. That is the whole promise.

I won't tell you a shampoo treats a skin condition, because it does not, and because anyone telling you otherwise is selling something they should not be. If your dog's skin is genuinely troubling them, the person to talk to is your vet. What I make can sit alongside their advice. It does not replace it.
